Darran Mountains Rock Guidebook Launch Party!

Darran Mountains Rock Guidebook Launch Party!

Come celebrate the launch of THE definitive guide to Aotearoa's most legendary rock climbing area!

We’re psyched to be hosting the NZ Alpine Club’s launch event for Darran Mountains Rock, by Tom Riley & Tom Hoyle, this Friday 2nd May from 6pm.

The Darran Mountains contain Fiordland National Park’s tallest peaks and are framed by Whakatipa Ka Tuka/Hollyford River and Piopiotahi/Milford Sound. This area is spectacularly beautiful with immense and rugged yet accessible terrain that allows climbers to enjoy what is simply the best rock climbing in New Zealand. Whether you seek steep sport routes for an athletic challenge, or longer adventures on clean alpine rock, the Darrans has the best rock and the best scenery in Aotearoa.

This new and revised edition includes all the rock climbing readily accessible from the Milford Road. This includes cragging in the Cleddau Valley, nautical adventures at Copper Point, the massive cliffs of The Airport Wall and Sinbad Gully, as well as alpine multi-pitch climbing on Moir’s Mate, Barrier Knob and in the Adelaide Cirque.

We’ll have live DJs, a special Darrans-themed boulder set, spot prizes, $20 pizza & pint specials and guest speakers! In addition to the authors Tom & Tom, our speaker lineup includes:

Rachel Musgrave Rachel “the Mus” Musgrave
Rach ‘the Mus’ Musgrave is a legendary Kiwi climber known for her bold style, decades-long dedication to the sport, and inspiring presence in the climbing community. She continues to climb hard into her 40s, balancing life and injuries with a love for movement over recognition. Rach will be speaking on the geology of the Darrans – hint: it’s not granite!
Derek Thatcher Derek Thatcher
Derek ‘the Dispatcher’ Thatcher has been at the forefront of hard rock climbing in NZ for three decades, and has established a solid majority of hard routes in the country. Derek will be speaking on the early development of routes at Babylon and other spots.
Kiri Shibahara Kiri Shibahara
Uprising Youth Ambassador Kiri Shibahara will be a familiar face to many around the gym and on the comp scene – most recently seen on the podium at this year’s Summer Sends. She’s passionate about climbing – indoors and out – and encouraging more women to take up the sport. Kiri will share stories from her recent trip to the Darrans.

The Darran Mountains Rock guide will be available to purchase on the night for a special promo rate of over $20 off the RRP — the perfect chance to grab a copy and start planning your next trip, especially after hearing from our inspiring guest speakers.

It’s set to be an epic night — no tickets needed, just swing by and join the fun!
