Bouldering

No ropes, no harnesses, no limits.

Bouldering is as much a challenge for the mind as it is the muscles; figuring out how to get from A to B takes strength, strategy and problem-solving skills. It’s an activity for all ages and all abilities.

If fitness is your goal, bouldering is an exciting alternative to a typical gym routine. It offers a full body workout that’s different every time and combines resistance and aerobic training. But it’s just as great for anyone simply looking for an activity that comes with a great social aspect and a sense of achievement.

Do it solo, with mates or as a group activity with your work or sports team or even a party crowd. Bouldering is a very sociable activity and our new facility is purpose-designed to support and encourage the growing climbing community we have here in Canterbury.

Courses and Classes

For your first visit one of the Uprising team will take you through an introduction to bouldering and safety induction – this is included in your entry price.

When you are ready to take your climbing to the next level we have a group of passionate and experienced coaches who can help you fast track your progress. Our movement skills courses are the ideal for anyone from those just starting out to experienced climbers looking to push their grade. We currently offer two class types based on your ability level:

Bouldering Beta Beginner

This is a casual coached session for adult climbers at a beginner level. Each week we build around a different technique or skill to help you on your climbing journey. The first session of each month covers beginner basics, with following sessions building on those skills progressively. To get the most out of this class we recommend that you attend all four consecutive sessions, however drop-in attendees are also welcome. Classes run weekly on Wednesday from 6:00-7:00pm.

Bouldering Beta Improver

If your climbing has hit a bit of a road block, or you feel like you want to push your technique and skill to the next level, this is for you. The Improver classes are an 8 week series of 60-minute sessions that provide you with a greater understanding of climbing movement, skills and techniques to develop your climbing on steeper and/or more complex terrain. We will cater to your ability, but we advise that you are competently climbing Tags 2-3 before joining. The sessions can be done as a series or as a one off drop in and will focus on a different theme each week, with different instructors for Mondays and Thursdays.

Freedom

No ropes. No right way or wrong way. No routines. No barriers. No limits. No expectations. Find true freedom at Uprising:

The freedom to fall – the spongy floors will catch you.

The freedom to climb your way – each climb is as unique as the climber; do it when and how you want to.

The freedom to get involved – everyone of all ages and abilities is welcome here; just give it a go.

Fun

It’s fitness in disguise, an adventure sport activity that’s both challenging and fun.

There’s none of that aggravation of a ‘routine grind’ like you can get going to the gym all the time. In fact, it’s not like going to a gym at all, bouldering is more like a hobby.

Despite the certain level of intensity bouldering comes with, Uprising is a lighthearted place, offering a relaxed, cheerful environment. The climbing area is brightly coloured and there are no posers, just lots of good vibes and good folk giving it a go.

This is our place – Castle Hill

Castle Hill Basin is renowned as one of the worlds greatest bouldering areas, and it is right on our doorstep.

Flock Hill, The Teapot, Quantum, Spittle, Wuthering Heights – there is a lifetime of naturally sculpted limestone boulders to explore. At Uprising we are inspired by the natural beauty of this special place. An amazing bouldering community exists here in Christchurch and it is our privilege to provide a base for this crew when they are not at the rocks.

New Challenges Updated Regularly

Our skilled routesetting team update a section of boulders twice weekly, so there are always new and interesting challenges to test yourself on.

Resets happen during the day on Mondays and Thursdays.
To see which section of the wall has had the most recent update check out Uprising on the free Toplogger app, where you can also log your climbs, comment on your faves, and find the V-grades of all our boulders.
