Headed to Castle Hill Basin?

Castle Hill Basin is internationally renowned for its unique limestone formations and technical climbing style. It is a privilege to be able to climb there, and as such, there are some things we need to do to look after this treasure.

Flock Hill is a working high country station and access to climbers is very much at the discretion of the station owners. Castle Hill (Kura Tāwhiti) is also of special significance to Ngāi Tahu, the area has Tōpuni status, which is a legal recognition of the area’s significance to Ngāi Tahu and respects that they take an active role in management of the land.

You will receive a cleaning kit (spray bottle & brush) with your pad rental – please use this to help preserve the limestone. Cleaning hand and foot holds in the basin removes chalk and built-up rubber that contributes to polishing. It also removes unsightly marks being left on the rock by climbers. All you need to do is

Spray. Brush. Spray. Leave to dry.

Simple as that! Make sure the rock is thoroughly dry before climbing, the outer layer is hard but the rock is porous and has a soft underlayer. 20-30 mins on a dry windy day and you should be all good, but expect to wait longer on overcast still days. Give it a clean and come back another day or at the end of a session.

Keep your boots squeaky clean and free from grit/chalk, and keep your chalk use to the minimum. Away you go!
